By listening to local needs and collaborating on sustainable projects like building clay stoves and helping with wildlife care, the trip ensures tourism benefits the people rather than exploiting them. Day 1 - Arrival in Phnom Penh, Cambodia

As you arrive into Phnom Penh our team will meet you as you come through customs and take you to our hotel in the centre of the city. In the afternoon you are free to head out and explore the city under your own steam.

Today is an arrival day, so guests will arrive throughout the day and you are free to take the day at your own pace. Relax at the hotel or walk around the centre of the city. It's a very safe and friendly place!

Meals are not included on the arrival day as guests will arrive at different times throughout the day. However for those arriving early we plan to eat together in the early evening around 7pm.

Day 2 - Royal Palace and Wat Phnom

Today we dive into Cambodia’s regal history with a visit to the stunning Royal Palace, home to exquisite Khmer architecture and the Silver Pagoda’s treasure trove of artifacts. Later, we explore Wat Phnom, a serene hilltop temple steeped in legend and the home of Cambodia Bhuddism.

After a delicious local lunch, we explore the many markets that form integral part in Cambodians’ lives. Here we will sample exotic fruits, shop for handmade crafts, and experience the daily life of Phnom Penh’s residents. End the day with a warm welcome dinner at one of the top local restaurants in the city.

Wind down with a serene sunset boat ride along the Chaktomuk River, a tranquil moment to absorb the day’s experiences.

Day 4 - Journey to Battambang

In the morning we travel outside of the city into rural Cambodia to the city of Battambang, well known for its art, laid back way of life and friendly charm. Upon arrival, we will visit the dramatic Phnom Sampov, a temple in the hills surrounding the city where we’ll watch a breathtaking sunset and witness the flight of millions of bats emerging from the surrounding caves. In the evening we'll travel back to Battambang for a city walk and a lively circus performance by the talented youth of Phare Ponleu Selapak, non-profit arts and circus school that empowers children and youth through artistic, educational, and social support programs.

Pedal or ride a tuk-tuk through lush landscapes, visit local family homes, and learn about traditional crafts like rice paper making and wine production. This ride provides a meaningful connection to the people and their way of life and a great way to see the real Cambodia. In the afternoon we have free time to relax or explore the countryside.

Accommodation: Cambana La Riviere Hotel
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 6 to 8 - Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary

From Battambang we travel North East to an extraordinary organisation. The Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary (CWS) is a sister park to ENP in Chiang Mai, Thailand home to Lek the elephant whisperer. Both sanctuaries practice ethical standards so there is no touching, hand feeding, bathing or riding of the elephants. We'll spend 2 nights here up close to these majestic creatures learning and supporting the animals care and the sanctuary’s conservation efforts.

During our stay at the centre we'll be involved with in hands-on activities like preparing food and bringing out food to the elephants, tracking them though the jungle and watching them in their natural environment.

In addition to the elephants there are rescue dogs and cats in the centre, so your volunteering includes working in the enclosures, walking the dogs or sitting with the cats when you take a break if you so desire. They are all spayed on arrival and each of the animals will remain in the shelter for their lifetime as they have been abandoned on the streets of the city.

There is also a monkey rescue area where you can watch their antics and also help to prepare their food. They live in a large jungle area beside the accommodation block and are the cheekiest monkeys you will ever come across. Watch your fingers, your camera and your phone as they love to nibble!

Accommodations are basic, but very comfortable. They are all equipped with electricity sockets, fans, mosquito nets and en-suite bathrooms. Almost all the huts face on to the elephant enclosure so you can watch them in the evening as they settle for the night and catch them at their most active in the morning.

We will leave the sanctuary after lunch on Day 8 to take the roughly 90 minute trip to the bustling city of Siem Reap. After your volunteering and the long bus ride you'll appreciate a cool drink and a dip in the hotel pool. There are multiple restaurants just feet away and we are beside Pub Street as well as the night market.

Day 9  - Siem Reap

Back in Siem Reap, we will spend part of the morning at the  APOPO Centre where we'll discover how locals train African Giant Pouched Rats (they are much cuter than they sound) to detect landmines in Cambodia and beyond. These rats and their trainers play a vital role in clearing these dangers. We will see the rats in action, learn about Cambodia’s recent history, and even hold a rat yourself- they're actually very cuddly!

After a lunch of your choosing at the Botanical Gardens, we will visit the Metta Karuna Reflection Center, an interfaith reflection and refugee centre doing incredible work in the fields of human rights, refugees and human trafficking, peace and reconciliation, and campaigning against landmines and cluster bombs. We'll spend time with Tun Channareth (Reth) who accepted the Nobel Peace Prize in 1997 on behalf of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines and listen to the stories of love, life and loss from this powerful man. We'll also spend some hands-on time in the wheelchair workshop learning first hand how these chairs are life changing for so many survivors.

In the afternoon, we'll visit the Rokhak Women's Cooperative to see how they have been able to make a sustainable living from their weaving and basket making. While you're here you can try your hand at making something unique.

Optional Add-on Tour
LAOS

Your amazing tour of Cambodia is over, you’ve enjoyed every minute, every taste and every experience.

And you definitely don’t want to go home just yet!

Why not join us for a 5-day extension to your tour in Laos. A landlocked Asian nation, it's known for its pleasant climate, especially during the cool season, and also for its relaxed atmosphere, beautiful natural scenery, and relatively untouched culture. Laos is one of the 4 communist countries in the world and although tourism is opening up, it's still quite underdeveloped. Much of the tourism is aimed at backpackers following the banana pancake trail and staying in hostels, but our EVA extension is based in a very pleasant hotel with a pool, bar and easy access to the Night Market. Laos is an underrated destination and a perfect way to round up your authentic Southeast Asian experience.

Day 13 - Siem Reap to Luang Prabang

We’ll fly from Siem Reap to Luang Prabang and get a cab to the hotel to check in. Our hotel is very centrally located, so we can begin our exploration of the city as soon as we are settled in or just sit and relax by the pool. We'll have a short briefing to get oriented so you will have an idea of where everything is located. There are shops and restaurants nearby and it's a wonderful setting to start to get to know Laos.

Later this evening, we’ll enjoy dinner at a local restaurant and visit the night market, which is about 10 minutes walk from the hotel. The Luang Prabang night market is exceptional with local crafts and artists who show their wares, but the vendors change almost every night so it's always new and exciting.

Accommodation: Vang Luang Hotel, Luang Prabang
Meals: Breakfast and dinner

Day 14 - Kuang Si Falls

We’ll continue our explorations in today with a comfortable jeep ride to the Kuang Si Falls and Bear Sanctuary. We'll start at the waterfalls were there are numerous milky turquoise pools and waterfalls to enjoy as well as an area for swimming, but we’ll try to have an early start to avoid the crowds. We’ll also head over to the Sun Bear sanctuary next door to learn more about these endangered creatures and the work being done to protect them.

Following this we can stop for a relaxing lunch and on the way back to the hotel we'll stop at the Buffalo Dairy Farm for a guided walk and some ice cream. The afternoon is yours to rest, relax and enjoy. Your EVA Host will be on hand to assist with any directions or recommendations that you might need if you want to do any optional activities

Accommodation: Vang Luang Hotel, Luang Prabang

Considerations: We will take a trolley to the top waterfall and you can either take that back down or take the trolley.

Meals: Breakfast and Lunch

Day 15 - Luang Prabang

We'll make an early start today to visit the Pak Ou Caves, 2 limestone caves filled with over 400,000 Buddha images and statues. This has been a place of prayer and safety from foreign invasion in this area for centuries and was a originally dedicated to nature spirits before becoming a Buddhist site. Laotian Kings used to travel here every year to worship and add to the collection.

Accommodation: VangLuang Hotel

Considerations: Take a torch for the cave as it can be dark

There are 200 steps to the caves, but it is not a difficult climb

The conditions at the dock can be variable, but we will try to find the easiest way to board on the day

Meals: Breakfast and lunch

Day 16 - Silk weaving

We'll hop back in our jeep today to visit Ock Pop Tok, a living crafts centre about 2 km outside the city where we will have a silk weaving class. This attraction has proven extremely popular with EVA guests with some of the group staying behind in Luang Prabang to do more!

Following a lunch at the centre we'll return to Luang Prabang to visit the Royal Palace Museum for a tour. The Palace was turned into a museum in 1975 after the Revolution and offers another unique insight into the culture and history of this fascinating country.

Accommodation: VangLuang Hotel - Luang Prabang
Meals: Breakfast and lunch

Day 17 - Luang Prabang

It’s our last full day in Luang Prabang, so we’ll make sure to make the most of it. In the early morning, you have the option to witness the alms giving ceremony in the early morning. This is a longstanding tradition in Laos Buddhist culture where people give alms or donations to the monks on the street. It dates all the way back to the 14th century, around the time when Theravada Buddhism was chosen as the official religion by Laotian Kings. It is still daily practiced by thousands of Buddhist monks across Laos today.

This act is known as “Sai Bat” or “Tak Bat”. Every morning at dawn, Buddhist monks and novices in orange robe set out from their monasteries to receive offerings of food from the local people. The offerings consist mainly of sticky rice which devotees wake up before dawn to cook.  With more than 30 active Buddhist monasteries in Luang Prabang, the long column of monks walking silently and barefoot to receive their alms from people sitting on stools lining the road before them is certainly a sight to behold. This is now an optional feature of the tour as it has become very touristic and not as authentic as it once was. However if you wish to see it, we will arrange a tuk-tuk for you and meet you afterwards for breakfast.

This is our last evening and we'll have a final dinner together so you can enjoy the taste of Laos one more time and get those last minute gifts at the Night Market.

Accommodation: VangLuang Hotel - Luang Prabang
Meals: Breakfast & Dinner

Day 18 - Departure from Luang Prabang

We say goodbye this morning after breakfast and hope that you have enjoyed exploring and learning more about Laos—its history, people, and hopes for a more prosperous future. We’ve loved having you on the Cambodia/Laos tour and hope to see you on an EVA tour again in the future.

We'll help you arrange your transport to Luang Prabang International Airport and wish you a safe journey home.
