Upon arrival, we will visit the dramatic Phnom Sampov, a temple in the hills surrounding the city where we’ll watch a breathtaking sunset and witness the flight of millions of bats emerging from the surrounding caves. Day 6 to 8 - Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary
From Battambang we travel North East to an extraordinary organisation. The Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary (CWS) is a sister park to ENP in Chiang Mai, Thailand home to Lek the elephant whisperer. Both sanctuaries practice ethical standards so there is no touching, hand feeding, bathing or riding of the elephants. We'll spend 2 nights here up close to these majestic creatures learning and supporting the animals care and the sanctuary’s conservation efforts.
During our stay at the centre we'll be involved with in hands-on activities like preparing food and bringing out food to the elephants, tracking them though the jungle and watching them in their natural environment.
In addition to the elephants there are rescue dogs and cats in the centre, so your volunteering includes working in the enclosures, walking the dogs or sitting with the cats when you take a break if you so desire. They are all spayed on arrival and each of the animals will remain in the shelter for their lifetime as they have been abandoned on the streets of the city.
There is also a monkey rescue area where you can watch their antics and also help to prepare their food. They live in a large jungle area beside the accommodation block and are the cheekiest monkeys you will ever come across. Watch your fingers, your camera and your phone as they love to nibble!
Accommodations are basic, but very comfortable. They are all equipped with electricity sockets, fans, mosquito nets and en-suite bathrooms. Almost all the huts face on to the elephant enclosure so you can watch them in the evening as they settle for the night and catch them at their most active in the morning.
We will leave the sanctuary after lunch on Day 8 to take the roughly 90 minute trip to the bustling city of Siem Reap. After your volunteering and the long bus ride you'll appreciate a cool drink and a dip in the hotel pool. There are multiple restaurants just feet away and we are beside Pub Street as well as the night market.

These rats and their trainers play a vital role in clearing these dangers. We will see the rats in action, learn about Cambodia’s recent history, and even hold a rat yourself- they're actually very cuddly!
After a lunch of your choosing at the Botanical Gardens, we will visit the Metta Karuna Reflection Center, an interfaith reflection and refugee centre doing incredible work in the fields of human rights, refugees and human trafficking, peace and reconciliation, and campaigning against landmines and cluster bombs. We'll spend time with Tun Channareth (Reth) who accepted the Nobel Peace Prize in 1997 on behalf of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines and listen to the stories of love, life and loss from this powerful man. Day 17 - Luang Prabang
It’s our last full day in Luang Prabang, so we’ll make sure to make the most of it. In the early morning, we can witness the alms giving ceremony in the early morning. This is a longstanding tradition in Laos Buddhist culture that people will giving alms or donations. It dates all the way back to the 14th century, around the time when Theravada Buddhism was chosen as the official religion by Laotian Kings. It is still daily practiced by thousands of Buddhist monks across Laos today.
This act is known as “Sai Bat” or “Tak Bat”. Every morning at dawn, Buddhist monks and novices in orange robe set out from their monasteries to receive offerings of food from the local people. The offerings consist mainly of sticky rice which devotees wake up before dawn to cook. But sometimes offering food may contain fruit or other sweet treats, forming the monks’ daily meal. With more than 30 active Buddhist monasteries in Luang Prabang, the long column of monks walking silently and barefoot to receive their alms from people kneeling before them is certainly a sight to behold.
After this, we can head to the Royal Palace Museum for a guided tour. The Palace was turned into a museum in 1975 after the Revolution and offers another unique insight into the culture and history of this fascinating country.
